MPEG-H Audio: The new audio codec for 4K TV in South Korea
At CES 2017, Fraunhofer IIS will showcase a broad range of MPEG-H Audio technologies and products, ready to be used at the launch of South Korea’s terrestrial 4K TV broadcast service with MPEG-H Audio early 2017:
3D audio content production tools:
The Spatial Audio Designer (SAD) plugin is a tool for surround and 3D sound production on ProTools including an MPEG-H export function.
The Authoring Suite is a stand-alone application developed by Fraunhofer for authoring of MPEG-H audio content, monitoring and rendering of channels, objects and higher-order ambisonics including import and export of MPEG-H metadata.
- The first professional broadcast encoders from Kai Media and DS Broadcast which support MPEG-H Audio will be demonstrated in a 4K live broadcast chain.
- A 3D soundbar reference design will be presented for convenient playback of 3D sound in any living room without requiring the installation of a 3D loudspeaker setup.
MPEG-H Audio is designed to work with today's broadcast and streaming equipment. Its object-based audio allows viewers to adjust the sound mix to their preferences, while its support for immersive audio improves the level of realism of the listening experience. MPEG-H Audio will also tailor sound for optimal playback on a range of devices and environments, providing "universal delivery".
MPEG-H Audio is part of the ATSC 3.0 A/342 Candidate Standard and is the audio codec selected for ATSC 3.0 broadcasting in Korea. It will be the first next-generation audio system used on-the-air when broadcasts begin in Korea in spring 2017.

Cingo renders 3D audio content over headphones by incorporating head movements and as a result, sound sources can be perceived from anywhere in the 3D space around the listener. A truly immersive soundscape is of utmost importance in any VR experience and serves as a determining factor in the success of the illusion. The MPEG-H audio standard is the ideal companion for Cingo 3D audio rendering with the ability to deliver immersive 3D sound for virtual environments to mobile devices at bitrates used today for delivery of 2D surround sound. MPEG-H can carry channels, audio objects and higher-order-ambisonics signals. This capability makes it the ideal VR audio codec for user generated and Cinematic VR content, providing a complete toolset of VR audio mastering and mixing plugins from Fraunhofer IIS.
In addition to immersive sound, Cingo also enables an excellent surround sound listening experience over stereo speakers or headphones while providing existing stereo content with a more natural and clear sound. It includes features such as loudness optimization for listening in noisy environments and improves the intelligibility of dialog and commentary. Fraunhofer Cingo is used by industry leaders such as Google in its family of Nexus and Pixel devices, Samsung Gear VR, LG 360 VR, Alcatel VISION and in the Hulu VR app.
For the creation of 3D audio content that maximizes the VR experience, Fraunhofer IIS offers the production plugin "Cingo Composer". It allows the authoring and mixing of 3D audio for VR in the DAW. Monitoring can be done in real time using Cingo and head-tracking.
