MPEG-H Audio at IBC 2016

Interaction with on-screen display to adjust audio elements

MPEG-H Audio offers viewers the ability to turn up or down particular audio elements in a program - such as dialogue or sound effects - as they prefer.

Visit us at booth B80 in hall 8. We look forward to seeing you! At IBC 2016, Fraunhofer IIS will show different products and technologies related to MPEG-H Audio:

3D audio content production tools:

  • The J√ľnger Audio MPEG-H Audio Monitoring and Authoring Unit (AMAU) adapts today's 5.1 consoles for immersive audio production and allows broadcasters to audition MPEG-H Audio in the plant as it will be reproduced on viewer's devices.

  • The Spatial Audio Designer (SAD) plugin is a tool for surround and 3D sound production on ProTools including an MPEG-H export function.

Broadcast equipment:

  • The first professional broadcast encoders from Kai Media and DS Broadcast which support MPEG-H Audio will be demonstrated in a 4K live broadcast chain.

Consumer equipment:

  • A new prototype 3D soundbar will be presented for convenient playback of 3D sound in any living room without requiring the installation of a 3D loudspeaker setup.

MPEG-H Audio is designed to work with today's broadcast and streaming equipment. Its object-based audio allows viewers to adjust the sound mix to their preferences, while its support for immersive audio improves the level of realism of the listening experience. MPEG-H Audio will also tailor sound for optimal playback on a range of devices and environments, providing "universal delivery".

MPEG-H Audio is part of the ATSC 3.0 A/342 Candidate Standard and is the audio codec selected for ATSC 3.0 broadcasting in Korea. It will be the first next-generation audio system used on-the-air when broadcasts begin in Korea in spring 2017.
