MPEG-H Audio: The new audio codec for 4K TV in South Korea

At NAB 2017, Fraunhofer IIS will showcase a broad range of MPEG-H Audio technologies and products, ready to be used at the launch of South Korea’s terrestrial 4K TV broadcast service with MPEG-H Audio in May 2017:

3D audio content production tools:

  • The plugins Spatial Audio Designer (SAD) as well as DSpatial Reality extend ProTools for surround and 3D sound production including an MPEG-H export function.

  • The Authoring Tool is a stand-alone application developed by Fraunhofer for authoring of MPEG-H audio content. It provides monitoring and rendering of channels, objects and higher-order ambisonics content including the import and export of MPEG-H metadata.

Broadcast equipment:

  • The new Linear Acoustic AMS Authoring and Monitoring System is a comprehensive solution for real-time authoring, rendering, and monitoring of immersive audio programs while fully supporting MPEG-H Audio.
  • One of the first professional broadcast encoders from Kai Media that supports MPEG-H Audio will be demonstrated in a live 4K broadcast chain.

Consumer equipment:

  • A 3D soundbar reference design will be presented for convenient playback of 3D sound in any living room without requiring the installation of a 3D loudspeaker setup.

MPEG-H Audio is designed to work with today's broadcast and streaming equipment. Its object-based audio allows viewers to adjust the sound mix to their preferences, while its support for immersive audio improves the level of realism of the listening experience. MPEG-H Audio will also tailor sound for optimal playback on a range of devices and environments, providing ‘universal delivery’.

MPEG-H Audio is part of the ATSC 3.0 standard and of the DVB A/V codec specification. It is the audio codec selected for ATSC 3.0 broadcasting in Korea and will be the first next-generation audio system used on-the-air when broadcasts begin in Korea on May 31, 2017.

Fraunhofer Cingo® & MPEG-H for the best immersive sound experience on VR devices

Fraunhofer Cingo brings immersive audio to VR devices and applications with a stunning level of realism to create the experience of “being there”. With more than 25 years of experience in the field of audio coding and processing, Fraunhofer IIS is a driving force in the industry in the development and delivery of truly immersive sound on VR devices, smartphones and tablets.

Cingo renders 3D audio content over headphones by incorporating head movements and as a result, sound sources can be perceived from anywhere in the 3D space around the listener. A truly immersive soundscape is of utmost importance in any VR experience and serves as a determining factor in the success of the illusion. The MPEG-H audio standard is the ideal companion for Cingo 3D audio rendering with the ability to deliver immersive 3D sound for virtual environments to mobile devices at bitrates used today for delivery of 2D surround sound. MPEG-H can carry channels, audio objects and higher-order-ambisonics signals. This capability makes it the ideal VR audio codec for user generated and Cinematic VR content, providing a complete toolset of VR audio mastering and mixing plugins from Fraunhofer IIS.

In addition to immersive sound, Cingo also enables an excellent surround sound listening experience over stereo speakers or headphones while providing existing stereo content with a more natural and clear sound. It includes features such as loudness optimization for listening in noisy environments and improves the intelligibility of dialog and commentary. Fraunhofer Cingo is used by industry leaders such as Google in its family of Nexus and Pixel devices, Samsung Gear VR, LG 360 VR, Alcatel VISION and in the Hulu VR app.

For the creation of 3D audio content that maximizes the VR experience, Fraunhofer IIS offers the production plugin "Cingo Composer". It allows the authoring and mixing of 3D audio for VR in the DAW. Monitoring can be done in real time using Cingo and head-tracking.

Cingo Composer: Simplifying Immersive Sound Production for Virtual Reality

Looking for a tool that simplifies mixing immersive sound for VR? If so, be sure to check out the Cingo Composer plug-in at NAB! The Cingo Composer is a dedicated VR audio plug-in for VST and AAX, enabling sound designers to easily mix, pan and monitor immersive audio projects. The plug-in supports audio objects, multichannel beds and ambisonic signals, and exports your immersive mix to MPEG-H Audio. We recently released a BETA version of the plug-in. At NAB 2017, you can demo Cingo Composer; author and mix immersive audio for VR, as well as monitor in real time using Cingo and head-tracking.
